Marcelin Longuein the Batanga transit centre for refugees from Central African Republic (CAR). Marcelin has lived without the use of his legs for as long as he can remember. Being disabled made his life difficult, but it didn't' stop him from starting a family. Seleka forces advancing from the capital killed his brother. When they descended on Marcelin's village, they took his wheelchair, but left him and his family with their lives. The death of Marcelin's brother was particularly devastating as "he was the only person who truly helped us to live," recalls Marcelin. His brother gave a portion of his monthly salary to his handicapped younger brother and his family. Knowing that their lives were equally at risk, and that they would likely starve without financial help, Marcelin, his heavily-pregnant wife and their two young children fled across the Oubangi River. Six days after they arrived in Batanga, their third child was born. The most important thing that Marcelin was able to bring with him are the crutches that he displays in this photograph. "My brother made these for me," he recalls. "They are like my legs. They allow me to walk. If I didn't have them I could have died, because I wouldn't be able to move, to flee, or to feed myself."
