50 year old Adele received a fistula operation in the University Hospital of Kamenge in Bujumbura. For 15 years she lived with fistula, a hole in the birth canal which she got after a prolonged labour. For years she smelled of leaking urine and her legs burned from the acid in the urine. After getting fistula she still gave birth to two babies, but both died in infancy. After her husband died Adele decided to return to her home village in the province of Ngozi. But there she was also excluded socially and not accepted in church or at the market because of the bad smell. Left untreated, fistula can lead to chronic medical problems, including ulcers and kidney disease. A simple surgical procedure can normally repair the injury, but the problem in Burundi is that there is no-one trained to perform the operation. Adele's operation was possible thanks to an initiative of Handicap International and Gynecologie Sans Frontieres.
