Riot police arrest Reverend Michael Weider, an Anglican priest from the local township who led a community sit-in outside the town council offices to protest the conservative council's 'whites only' policy on public amenities such as the library. Several people were killed by the police during subsequent clashes over the issue before the council relented and opened the facilities to all races. The policy was scrapped in October 1990, in the dying days of apartheid.
