Urhobo women dry tapioca using the heat generated by a gas flare to carry out the process. There is little understanding or education of the risks posed by the flares and little physical prevention to stop the practice. The women have discovered that a process, that once took many days to carry out under the sun, can be completed in just a few hours using the heat of a flare. However, in doing so the women and children involved are exposing themselves to poisonous fumes.
