Oleksander Gaponov, the second engineer, in the engine room of the Mary Maersk container ship. His forearms are decorated with tattoos of tools mirroring the actual tools on the walls behind him. The Mary Maersk is one of 20 identical ‘Triple E Class’ cargo ships ordered by the Danish shipping company Maersk. Weighing in at 55,000 tonnes and measuring 399 metres long, 73 metres high and 59 metres wide, they are, equally, the world’s largest container ships. Too big for the recently widened Panama Canal they will ply the Europe - Asia routes via the Suez Canal.
