Seen from the Druze village of Majdal Shams, Golan Heights, protesters mark the 44th anniversary of the 1967 Six-Day War, at the Syria-Israel border. Israeli troops opened fire at Palestinian protesters in Syria, who rushed towards the border fence; Syrian state reports said 23 demonstrators were killed. Israel had been on high alert for a feared repetition of last month's storming by thousands of Palestinian protesters from Syria and Lebanon into Israel. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the war and annexed the territory in 1981, a move not recognised internationally.
