Rafiqul Islam, the marketing and sales director for ACME Laboratories LTD, Bangladesh's second largest pharmaceutical company. The company is producing and marketing a zinc based medication, named Baby Zinc, for the treatment of diarrheoa in children aged under five years. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the private sector, Bangladesh is leading the world with the first national roll out of zinc treatment for diarrhoea in children under five. Zinc treatment reduces the severity and duration of diarrhoea, but also prevents future episodes, and can help lower the overall number of deaths by up to 50%. The use of zinc has the potential to dramatically cut the number of childhood deaths and contribute significantly to achieving Millennium Development Goal 4 for child mortality, both in Bangladesh and other developing countries...
