A cable car employee feeding a Barbary Macaque at the arrival station of the cable car to the top of the Rock of Gibraltar. In the background is shipping in the Straits of Gibraltar and the Spanish mainland beyond. Legend states that if the apes leave then the British will lose control of the territory, and that Britain's wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill obtained a secret supply from Morocco to maintain morale. Their welfare was the direct responsibility of the British army garrison until it was withdrawn in 1991.
