Paramilitary police escort a convoy of civilians leaving Eldoret to travel to the capital. Most of them were from the Kikuyu tribe, who had been targeted in ethnic violence following protests against disputed election results. President Mwai Kibaki, a Kikuyu, was suspected of rigging the vote to retain power. Supporters of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) had blocked the road.
