The Esponilla family sleep in their house in Santo Nino, Manila. Bhona and Charito Esponilla have seven children and live in 20 square meters of space. Poverty and overpopulation are closely connected. Poor families often have the most children. People in this area live in small homemade huts, many made entirely from rubbish and leftover building materials that they found on the nearby garbage dump. These houses are all illegal, since no one has the acquired permissions to live on the land. People have been living here for up to twenty years - but everyday they might get moved and their neighbourhood demolished to make room for new apartment blocks that they could never afford to buy.
