The ruins of the Ishimbay Gulag. The countless prisoners who lived and died in these former barracks were forced to build the nearby city of Salavat and other portions of the Soviet infrastructure. When a prisoner failed to meet their daily work quota, they would be punished with a reduction in their food ration. Countless Mennonites perished in the Gulags during the 20th century.
