California is going through its worst drought in 90 years and with the world price for almonds increasing farmers are establishing more and more almond orchards to take advantage of these prices. However, the production of a single almond nut requires almost four litres of water which means that almond orchards require eight percent of California's water reserves. That is more than the water used by the habitants of Los Angeles and San Francisco combined. While the cities have to reduce their water consumption, water is used without limit in the state's almond orchards.
