Zhang Qicai, 41, arrives at the courthouse that she cleans in Wuxi, the fast growing city that was formerly known as White Horse Village. Zhang Qicai left school at 11 to help support her family. She was from the first generation to leave the land for a migrant job as a maid in Beijing. She built her house on the proceeds she earned. She brought up her two children alone, having sent her husband a thousand miles away to a chemical factory.
