The Cinema Impero building on Harnet Avenue, built in 1937 and designed by architect Mario Messina. The Italian Art Deco movement was initially introduced to the city during the colonial era. The style continued to flourish into the 1960s as local architects adopted the movement. Asmara is an Art Deco treasure trove and UNESCO is considering making the city a World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding Modernist architecture.
