A by-election held on 23 February 2017 resulted in Labour holding the constituency of Stoke-on-Trent Central. Although the outcome was expected, its been a safe Labour seat since the constituency was formed in 1950, there had been some credence given to a surprise UKIP victory given the area's strong support for Brexit.
