Protests took place in the Sandtown neighbourhood in response to the death of Freddie Gray, a 25 year old African-American who died from severe neck injuries sustained while being transported in the back of a police van after he was wrongfully arrested on 12 April 2015. When there was an outbreak of violence and looting among some of the protestors a curfew, enforced by the National Guard, was imposed citywide on 27 April 2015 and remained until 3 May 2015.
