The 26 December 2004 tsunami carried this 2,600-ton PLTD Apung I ship about five miles inland into a neighbourhood already underwater. When the water receded, the ship landed atop two homes. Since then, the site of the ship and a new city park, with a memorial enshrining hundreds of photographs that documented the tsunami devastation, has become a destination for locals and tourists.
