His forces have been accused of multiple human rights abuses, and have often changed sides in Afghanistan's complex web of shifting alliances. In late 2001, as part of the Northern Alliance, Dostum directed the campaign to recapture the city of Mazar-e-Sharif from the Taliban. He was then appointed Deputy Defence Minister in the interim government led by Hamid Karzai.
