Francesco Tuccio, a carpenter, helped recover the bodies of about 100 Somali migrants who died when their boat sunk off the coast of the island. He took the wood that the boat was made from, which he describes as a rare wood found only on Lapedusa, soaked with the blood and tears of those drowned migrants, and crafted crosses from them in order to memorialise those who died.
