At the first sign of the sun people hold up their hands to greet the light at a festival, held at 15,260 feet (4,650) metres above sea-level, to celebrate Aymara New Year (Machaq Mara), on the 21st June. This is the winter solstice, when the sun comes closest to the earth, signifying the time for planting and new growth.
