Money lender Viviane Betoko (50), who grants short-term loans to teachers at an interest rate of 50 per cent, sits with her ledger as she prepares to collect what she is owed. Civil servants in rural villages are paid by bank agents who travel the region paying salaries in cash. She follows the bankers vehicle with her motorcycle over a distance of 103 kilometres. ''For me it is crucial to be present when the bank agents pay the salaries'', she emphasises, ''Otherwise I'll never see my money again!''
