A Turkana woman adorned with traditional beaded necklaces tends to her plants on an aloe vera plantation in the arid Kenyan-Ugandan border region. The aloe vera plantation, one of the development projects managed by the NGO Practical Action, was set up to help women from the semi-nomadic rural communities in the Great Rift Valley generate their own revenue and become more self-sufficient.
