People of Nepali origin expelled from Bhutan languish in refugee camps in Nepal. After the 1988 census in Bhutan, people of Nepali origin (Lhotsampas) were expelled from the country in an attempt to keep the remote mountain kingdom racially pure. It is thought anywhere between 85,000 to 125,000 refugees live in camps in Eastern districts of Nepal. In the years since the initial expulsion there has been a further influx of refugees, with the majority settling outside of refugee camps, making it increasingly difficult to obtain exact figures.
