A group of elderly Yemeni men gathered in the small park outside the mosque in Burngreave, a cosmopolitan area which is one of the centres of Yemeni settlement in Sheffield. Sheffield (and its close neighbour Rotherham) has one of the largest Yemeni communities in the UK. Single Yemeni men were the first to arrive during the 1950s and 60s, working in the steel and engineering industries. Some returned to Yemen, others were joined by wives and family, and there is still a thriving and close-knit Yemeni community in the area, many of them born in the UK.
