At approximately 95 years of age, Poakurugu Bukari is the oldest resident of the Gambaga camp for alleged witches. She has lived in the camp for 30 years, but still hopes her children will come one day and take her home. The belief in witchcraft is widespread and deeply, rooted in Ghana, and the notion that a person has been cursed or bewitched is used to explain all manner of unfortunate occurrences. The vast majority of those accused of being witches are women, often vulnerable elderly widows. Women ostracised by their communities might find shelter at a 'witch camp' – part sanctuary, part prison.
