Xiang Caiping, 66, feeds her pigs at her home in Wuxi the fast growing city that was formerly known as White Horse Village. After two daughters, Xiang Caiping hid in the hills to avoid the forced abortion of her illegal son but was financially ruined by the resulting fines. She farmed pigs, oranges and silkworms alone while her husband worked away, both struggling to earn for the prized son's college education. At 65, she still raises pigs and rarely sees her son who lives in Chongqing though recently, for his wedding celebrations, the couple used their life's savings to rebuild their house which now has a second floor with new furnishings for her son while they live on the ground floor in the simple manner that always have.
