Young boys, dubbed 'Mambibi', fight during the Musangwe tournament. Musangwe is a traditional form of bare fist fighting that has been practiced by vhaVenda men and boys for many decades. The sport has its origins in the rural villages of Tshaulu and Gaba in the Limpopo Province. These two villages face each other across the Lundevhe River. Many years ago, cattleherds from both villages shared a single cattle dip, and a friendly rivalry began over who would use the dip. These bouts developed into a formal arrangement which became a popular event in the quiet rural villages. Now, the fighting takes place in the form of a tournament that lasts for several weeks at the end of each year.
