Marguerite Barankitse (known as the Angel of Burundi) in her office at Maison Shalom, the orphanage she founded in 1994. In the previous year civil war broke out in Burundi leading to inter-ethnic massacres, Barankitse, at great personal risk, managed to save 25 Hutu, Tutsi and Twa orphans and established a home for them. She has now helped more than 10,000 child victims of inter-ethnic violence from across Burundi. In a series of homes these children can now grow up in an extended adopted family with security, education and love.
