In 2011 over 37000 mangroves were planted as part of Kiribati Adaptation Program in North and South Tarawa as well as on other  Kiribati atolls. More mangrove trees are being planted to prevent further coastal erosion in local communities. The Kiribati Adaptation Program has a total budget of GBP 6.9 million (USD 10.8 million) funded by the Australian and Japanese governments among others.
