Semi (born 1931) was one of tens of thousands of 'comfort women' forced into prostitution by the Japanese military during World War II..As a 13-year-old girl, Semi was for three months picked up from home almost daily and forced into prostitution at different locations, often nearby hotels. She was constantly picked up with a group of girls from the village, among them an older, already married sister. "My parents said: 'It doesn't matter, just go with them.' Refusal was impossible. They took us, and then we had to wash up, put on a kimono and do our make-up with lipstick and powder. After that, I had to massage the soldiers and cuddle with them, let them kiss me, and such. For an hour, then it was the next one's turn, until the whistle blew. That was the sign for us to gather at the truck to go home. And the next day they came to get us again." After the war she heard that a second sister, Wagiyem (also portrayed in this series) had been kept for months in a barracks and systematically raped.
