Instead, warlords supported by heavily armed militias have ruled the country. The US has claimed that Somalia may become a new base for global terrorism in the wake of the war in Afghanistan. In November 2001, Washington froze the funds of al Barakaat, Somalia's main bank, for suspected links with al-Qaeda. This has had a further devastating effect on the lives of a population which has already been ravaged by war, famine and disease.
