Upon hearing the news that Mubarak was stepping down, protesters rushed to celebrate with the soldiers on top of tanks outside the state television building. Many had regarded the army as their saviour and when the announcement came emotions, which had previously been kept hidden finally came bursting out. 25 January 2011 saw the beginning of a non-violent 18 day protest movement that eventually ended the 30-year rule of Hosni Mubarak and his National Democratic Party.
