Dee Dum, a 27 year old Kachin man sits in a room at the YCC drug rehabilitation centre holding a bible. He has just finished a 40-day heroin detox at the centre founded in 2009 by a former convict and folk singer better known by his stage name Ahja. Ten years earlier Dee Dum went to work in Hpakant's informal jade mines hoping to find a rock that would enable him to come back rich. However, soon after he began mining he became addicted to heroin and when he returned home many years later all he brought with him was a serious addiction. Although he says he has thought about going back to the mines in the hope of striking it rich, his fear of returning to heroin addiction has meant that for now he is staying put.
