Yugang Caves, begun around A.D. 460, are the earliest Buddhist carvings in China. 50,000 statues were originally carved in 252 caves in the sandstone cliffs of Wuzhou Shan, near Datong. Originally they were brightly painted but the passage of time has removed almost all the paint work...
