A man hangs sheets out to dry next to the Buriganga River. He was once a fisherman but pollution has killed off aquatic life in the River Buriganga forcing fishermen to find other work. Everyday 1.5 million cubic metres of waste water from 7,000 industrial units in surrounding areas and another 0.5 million cubic metres from other sources are released into the river. Although the government have enacted laws that require industry to safely process effluents these are rarely enforced and pollution remains uncontrolled. The river is biologically dead and increasingly a serious health hazard to those using and living near it.
