Children cross a taisala, or 'borrow pit', a stagnant tidal pool which grows ever more polluted in the overpopulated area in the absence of efficient waste management. In 1942 pits were dug in an area of land in order to provide a zone for American forces to develop a miltary base and the land was never replaced.
