Moroccan women, known locally as 'Mules', struggle to move their heavy loads of goods, bought within the Spanish exclave of Melilla, across the Barrio Chino border gate into Morocco. They are paid about GBP 2.60 to carry loads of up to 80kgs and make the trip up to four times a day. Melilla is a Spanish city on the north coast of Africa, bounded by Morocco and the Mediterranean Sea. Many would-be migrants see it as the gateway to Europe which accounts for the high-level of security along its borders. However, it is also a route of entry for goods and, if they can be carried by a person (the Bario Chino gate is for pedestrians only), do not attract taxes.
