The weekly pier walk occurs after the morning service at St Salvator's chapel. This tradition involves students wearing red robes and walking to the end of the harbour pier. St Andrews University is the third oldest in the English speaking world and students make up a third of the 24,000 population during term time. The town is also famed as the home of golf thanks to the presence of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (founded in 1754) that continues to be the legal authority concerning the rules of the game in most of the world.
