Jerico Torres Vinas, a Filipino member of the Mary Maersk container ship's crew, stands in the evening sun as it sails from the Netherlands to Morocco. The Mary Maersk is one of 20 identical ‘Triple E Class’ cargo ships ordered by the Danish shipping company Maersk. Weighing in at 55,000 tonnes and measuring 399 metres long, 73 metres high and 59 metres wide, they are, equally, the world’s largest container ships. Too big for the recently widened Panama Canal they will ply the Europe - Asia routes via the Suez Canal.
