Buddhist monks are given protection by the military as they go about their daily duties. Monks, policemen, teachers, government officials and other civil servants, are all targets in this conflict. The insurgency in Southern Thailand began as a conflict between the Malay muslim population and central government, but now the boundaries have become blurred and various guerilla groups have become involved. No-one seems certain as to who is fighting who. As of March 2008, the insurgency had claimed as many as 3,000 lives.
