Pupils at Mary John Primary School sit their end of term exam . Despite the fact that a year of conflict here has robbed teachers of their salaries, and the school of new books and equipment, the staff are doing their best to keep the children's education rolling. Approximately 30 percent of 950 the pupils attending the school are IDPs, forced from their homes after fighting broke out between government forces and rebels in December 2013. In early 2014, battles raged around the school compound, and bullets are still embedded in the walls. Nonetheless, the yearning to go to school was obvious, even among IDP pupils who then go 'home' in the evening to sleep in tents, abandoned huts, or with strangers who have offered them shelter. Many missed at least three months of classes as they hid from the fighting in the bush. All said they were working hard to catch up.
