Young men on their way to the annual Landsgemeinde (Cantonal assembly), carrying swords, symbolic of their right to vote. Regional issues are decided on by a show of hands in the Landsgemeindeplatz. Appenzell is a distinctly traditional canton, one of the last remaining places where this direct form of democracy - in which there is no anonymity - is still used, and where women only received the right to vote in 1990.
