Spectators watch the Olympic torch pass through Shanghai alongside Tang Jie (centre), who goes by the alias of CTGZ on the internet. He is the man responsible for the short film, "2008 China Stand Up" and is a PhD student in western philosophy at Fudan University. The clip, which is just over six minutes long, crystallized an outburst of nationalism that had been unleashed after a Tibetan uprising in March sparked foreign criticism of China and its hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games. Chinese citizens greeted the criticism with rare fury. In its first week and a half, the video drew more than a million hits and tens of thousands of favourable comments.
