Francis Mwuhia, 37 years old, who is married with three children and works as a banana trader and transporter. Each day he travels from his home village of Kibichoi to Ruiru, approximately eight kilometres, to sell the bananas he bought in his village. Depending on size, weight, quality he pays around Ksh 180 (GBP 1.13) per hand and sells them for about Ksh 400 (GBP 2.50) a hand in Ruiru's market. He can load his bicycle, which he bought in 2002, with up to 180 kg of bananas. The road to Ruiru is hilly. He has to push his bicycle and its load up-hill but when riding downhill he must beware as his bicycles brakes and tyres are old and worn.
