North Tarawa, on the Tarawa Atoll, seen from Kiribati's capital. This part of the atoll is part of the North Tawara Conservation Area. Some of the islets are connected by causeways or small bridges, in some - people cross by foot during low tide or take boats when the water is high. Due to urbanisation and overpopulation, North Tarawa has become home to increasing numbers of people. Just as in the southern part, the northern end of the atoll is threatened by coastal erosion and rising sea levels.
