The wounds to the child's body were caused by a traditional healer giving a treatment that was believed to be a cure for diarrhoea. The child's mother visited the healer prior to the hospital. Galcayo is a town in the self-declared autonomous state of Puntland. The populace in the region suffers from a litany of problems including conflict, drought, malnutrition and associated illnesses.
