Cloth being woven on a traditional loom in the village of Nanyaare. Pognaa Maabuora Sanduo I has facilitated the training of weavers in her community, as the sale of the cloth and clothes fashioned from it provides the women of her community with an income stream. The term 'Pognaa' is the feminine equivalent of 'naa', or chief. A Pognaa is responsible, in particular, for the wellbeing of women and children in her area of authority. While the title translates as 'woman chief', in practice her authority is subject to a male chief. The role of the Pognamine (plural of pognaa) is being revived after having been suppressed during the colonial era, and they are increasingly seen as a force for development.
