Tens of thousands of tons of steel from the WTC site was taken by barrge across the Hudson River to the Hugo Neu Schnitzer facility in Jersey City, NJ. where it was melted down as scrap metal and shipped primarily to markets in Asia. Some of the steel is 10 to 14 inches thick and must be hand cut by welders before it can be turned into scrap..
