An old residential area surrounded by new buildings in the Nanshi district, the oldest and geographic centre of Shanghai. It is being demolished to make room for new residential apartments and high-rise offices. To achieve this the authorities are relocating thousands of families in newly built homes, often far from their original settlements. Some families have resisted relocation and keep living among the ruins, while those who accept relocation demolish their own houses and recycle as much as they can, such as the bricks and internal wiring.
