A photograph released by Russian police investigating the Beslan school hostage-taking. According to them, it was taken in 2004 and shows former policeman Ali Taziyev (known by the code name Magas) second from left, with other leaders of the Chechen rebel movement, including notorious warlord Shamil Basayev (centre). Basayev has claimed responsibility for several terrorist attacks, including Beslan, and it is alleged that Taziyev was one of four commanders who masterminded the siege. Taziyev is said to have defected from the security services after he was caught up in a kidnapping in 1998, and to have subsequently become the leader of a bandit group in Ingushetia.
